“A place of Rest and Renewal”
1. The Need
A recent research project undertaken in 2015 says the following:
Missionaries declared that the number one need in the field is: “someone they can open their hearts to”. This conclusion was a surprise to many, due to previous research suggesting that missionaries often returned home, due to a lack of commitment, trouble working in teams, inadequate preparation, stress, or a lack of finances.
This confirms the need for frequent pastoral visits, but also highlights the need to establish a place of rest and spiritual refreshment for those serving God abroad.
For the past 5 years, Sandro and Gislene have been seeking the Lord, regarding establishing such a place of rest. Accommodation in other areas has been considered, and Christian organisations in Scotland who have residential accommodation, have been approached, but have been unwilling to offer any accommodation for this purpose.
2. Development Plan
In response to the need, the church in Currie formally approached the local council in December 2017, to seek clarification as to whether planning permission would be granted for an additional floor to be added to the building, to provide accommodation for missionary visitors to live temporarily on site. To our surprise, permission was granted on 6th June 2018, subject to appropriate building control requirements.
The site in Currie, is located 7 miles from Edinburgh city centre, 3 miles from Edinburgh airport, and is adjacent to open fields, the foothills of the Pentlands range, on the south western edge of Scotland’s capital city.
Due to limitation of land space, it is proposed to renovate the wooden section at the rear of the church building to accommodate 10-12 visitors, and extend this structure upwards to provide a flat, and dormitory/ family accommodation as required.
The church has sufficient funds available to modify the lower part of the building (£44k), and with offers of voluntary labour, it is estimated that the upper floor can be completed for around one hundred thousand pounds (£100k).
It is hoped that the site redevelopment can begin in October 2018, subject to sufficient funds being raised.
Much is being accomplished, already, but much more of the Lord’s plans have yet to come to pass, and we await the Lord’s provision.
The church in Currie are committed to support this development of their site, in order to see God’s Kingdom advance throughout the World.
